I note enquiries about Al Sultana  trip to the USA. Contempory American newspaper reports of her arrival in New York City refer to her on Thursday, Apri 30th, 1840 , as a "bark" twice which seems quite a specific description.Possibly the 3 masted ship in the background seascape of Mooney's portrait of Ahmed bin Naáman was intended to represent Sultana but there is no corroberating evidence. .M.Guillain (Paris 1856), II,241. states Sultanah was built in Bombay, but susequently refitting did take place at Matrah.This suggest to me that she made her 87 day voyage rigged as a   "bark".
