Dr. Hatem Al-Shanfari serves as an Assistant Professor
in the Department of Economics and Finance at the
College of Commerce & Economics of Sultan Qaboos
University in Muscat, Oman. He has won numerous awards
for his research, which is focused on asset pricing
models, monetary policy, financial markets, management
of financial institutions, and Trade in Services
(GATS). Dr. Al-Shanfari received two best paper awards
from international conferences, the International
Business & Economics Research Conference (USA 2002)
and the European Applied Business Research Conference
(Italy 2003). In 2004, he won an award for Excellence
in Teaching for the academic year 2002/2003 at Sultan
Qaboos University.

Dr. Al-Shanfari is currently a member of the Board of
Governors of the Central Bank of Oman and of the
Galfar Engineering & Contracting Company. He also
serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the
Gulf Investment Services Company and of the Gulf
Baader Capital Markets Company. In addition, he serves
as the Vice Chairman of the Board of the Omani
Economic Association, and is a Research Associate at
the Economic Research Forum for the Arab Countries,
Iran and Turkey.

Before joining Sultan Qaboos University, Dr.
Al-Shanfari worked from 1989-1991 as a Development
Planner for the Supreme Committee for Town Planning.
During that period, he was actively involved in the
macro-economic planning of Oman's fourth Five-Year
Development Plan (1991-1995). He contributed to the
supervision of the World Bank project Investment
Climate Survey for Small and Medium Size Enterprises
in Oman, which was commissioned by the Ministry of
National Economy in 2003. In addition, Dr. Al-Shanfari
carried out a survey for Muscat Securities Markets on
public attitudes towards investment in the stock
market in the Sultanate of Oman in 2004. He has also
previously served as a Board Member of Al-Omaniya
Financial Services Company (SAOG) and the Omani
Packaging Company (SAOG). Dr. Al-Shanfari holds a
Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Strathclyde,
Scotland.
