Around 632 Omani candidates began preparations for the
2008-11 legislative elections, to be held October 27,
through unprecedented public electoral campaigning.
Authorities have allowed the nominees to use any means
to advertise their campaigns, provided that they abide
by the electoral regulations. They can meet voters to
showcase their plans and views.
Interior Minister Saud bin Ibrahim al-Busaeedi told
the press that preparations for the elections were
underway, affirming that voters would cast their votes
through an organized process.
The Interior Ministry revealed that regions populated
by over 30,000 citizens could elect two candidates for
the council while those with lesser numbers could
nominate only one. About 23 regions will elect two
candidates and 38 others will elect one.
The central committee for the Shura Council elections
pointed out that 102 centers in Oman would receive
voters whereas 11 centers in Omani embassies around
the world would organize ballot casting.
The election would start in 61 region on October 27.
Ballot stations would be open for voters for 12 hours
starting 7 a.m. local-time. The estimated 388 683
eligible voters would choose the 84 new Shura
(consultative) Council members.
