Hi,

I totally agree with Perycas you should only buy things you like! 

However prices for "antiques" in Oman are high, so building up some
knowledge before you buy is not a bad idea, in particular if you are a
frequent buyer. 

I forgot to mention w.r.t. the Omani chests a simple test is to take out one
of the brass nails: if the shaft is made of brass and has flat sides than it
is handmade and the chest may be antique.

Some useful references on antiques are a) the 2 book set The Craft Heritage
of Oman b) Oman Adorned by Robert Richmond (silver) c) Kenya past and
present issue 19 1987  page 34 to 43 by Sheila Unwin on arab chests. D) The
book arms and armour of arabia by Robert Elgood also contains many Omani
items.

very difficult. the designs are 'traditional', more or less. When I buy 
stuff I tend to buy it with the idea that I like it and am prepared to 
pay x. I used to buy things from a gentleman in Mutrah,  whose shop was 
on the harbour side of the suq, sort of a wing that went out and down to 
street level where there was a fabric shop . He was v good as he did 
understand what he was selling, an hour spent with him was always 
informative, unlike many others who just wanted to sell it to you and 
say. 'very old, very old'.
