Salah,

While there may be incidences where "the west" has abused its 
attempts at understanding the world around us; it may be a 
bit premature to chastize Mr. Duester on his query.  If he 
had, for instance, implied that FGM is Islamic or Arabic or 
Omani or acceptable or any number of other objectionable 
stances then your response might be warranted.  As it stands, 
and without further explication from Mr. Duester, it would 
probably be more helpful to provide whatever information you 
may have.  And while some of us have been studying Arabic and 
countries that primarily speak Arabic and are aware of the 
unacceptable stereotypes that have emerged from American and 
European scholars, others are not as familiar.  And while 
familiar questions arise time and time again, those of us who 
are more familiar should be willing to provide assistance so 
as to avoid past failures.  Finally, FGM is a serious issue 
and it must be dealt with seriously.
